The answer to this question is, “yes, there are jobs if you have creativity, skills versatility, and the professionalism required.”
The people who are not finding jobs are lacking one of these essentials!
It takes a well thought out curriculum, your grit and hard work, and your passion and imagination.
Finding the education can be tricky because so many fine art programs have decreased emphasis on traditional skills, and finding the instructors who have these skills is not easy.
Sophisticated comprehension of representational visual language is now a rare commodity. Max the Mutt is committed to teaching these traditional fine art skills, because we know that understanding them and being able to use them liberates creativity, and is particularly critical for concept artists.
Traditional skills, married to an understanding of how to research and develop ideas, and an ability to develop those ideas into final format using Photoshop and 3D software…this is what will make you valuable to the film, animation and game industries.
Max the Mutt’s Concept Art graduates have had success finding employment because they have the skills and the professionalism companies want.
We have a graduate now employed doing Fantasy Art for a New York based company. We have graduates working as concept artists for film, animation and AAA video games. We have graduates who are or have been employed as colour experts, as Assistant Art Directors, background painters, character designers, and environment designers.
In addition to traditional fine art, we want our students to understand film language, illustration, and some graphic design, and have highly developed computer skills that will allow them to use that knowledge creatively to create characters, creatures, environments and props from initial ideas to full realization. They also know how to approach matte painting, how to do a storyboard and create an animatic, and how to work in both cartoon and realistic styles.
