“Who’s that Character?” is a workshop dedicated to helping students channel the power of their imagination to get the creative ideas in their heads onto the page! In this 8-week course, we will learn how to imagine and design fun and colorful characters through lessons in Character Design that can be used for Comic Books and Graphic Novels!

Each session will provide examples of various characters and breakdown aspects of their design to give you the tools to make your own identifiable and memorable character! These skills can be applied to any personal project, be it a short comic, animation, or video game.

Workshop sessions are scheduled to occur once a week on Tuesdays, starting October 12th, and be 2 hours each!



This workshop requires Internet Access and will take place via Google Hangouts/Meetings. Sessions will be recorded and provided to students. Students are encouraged to use their web camera or phone during the stream to share work if they would like to receive feedback or direction with their drawings.

Please note that materials are not included in the cost of this class.

Students should have the ability to work Traditionally or Digitally.

  • Traditional drawing tools such as pencil, paper, ruler and eraser. Pen and coloring tools such as pencil crayon, makers or paints will be required later in the course. A method of photographing/scanning artwork that they can upload is encouraged for any student who would like to receive feedback on their work.

  • Digital tools such as drawing program of choice, drawing tablet and pen. Students should already possess familiarity with these tools if pursuing this option.

  • Notebook for taking notes (if desired – optional)

  • An email address (student’s or parent/guardian’s) so that they can receive access to a Google Drive designated for file sharing.


About the Instructor

ELIZABETH CAREY is a Sequential Arts graduate of Max the Mutt who is using what she learned during her education to branch out and explore the avenues of the creative world. She is a person of faith who adores drawing and crafting new characters, stories, and art and has a passion for comic books, graphic novels, manga and animation. Her largest inspirations are nature and music, and her favourite things are Disney movies, cartoons, anime, Marvel & DC, Star Wars, jungle and pirate adventure stories, magic and fantasy, black & white films, vintage music,  and video games. Her favourite type of work to do is anything related to character design and world building, and she is currently working on multiple personal projects such as drafting the script for her first Webtoon series.

Work Examples
